Statement by Senator John W. Warner, Chairman, U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee on U.S.-India Agreement on Civilian Nuclear Cooperation

Washington, DC
March 2, 2006

This agreement is a positive step that will permit U.S. cooperation with India on nuclear energy, while bringing India's civilian nuclear program under the supervision of the IAEA. It will help India develop cleaner sources of energy as its economy continues to expand. It will also help our industrial base, as American firms lend their expertise in civilian nuclear power to our Indian partners.

As the Administration proposes legislation to implement this agreement, I will work closely with my colleagues to ensure that it also supports our longstanding interest in preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons and related technologies.
