Editorial: United against terror
Boston Herald, July 13, 2006

This time it was Bombay - a city farther away than London or Madrid. But we are all one world now - so close, so interconnected and so united in this battle against terror.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said yesterday, “This is not the first time that the enemies of our nation have tried to undermine our peace and prosperity. These elements have not yet understood that we Indians can stand united. That we will stand united . . . We will win this war against terror.”

Some 200 are reported dead and another 700 injured in a bombing aimed at the financial heart of India - a fact not lost on either Indian officials or our own.

India is not merely an economic powerhouse, it is also the world’s largest democracy - two sides of the same coin to our way of thinking and two strikes against it among those who loathe and fear the forces of freedom - both economic and political.

Little is known that would put a name or a face on this act of terror. Indian officials fear Islamic militants from Kashmir might be involved (it would not be the first time). But the timing and the technique of the attack have caused transit officials even in New York to be on heightened alert.

Such is the world in which we all now live - a world where friends good and true must stand together against such terror.
